DESCRIPTION: The Brother MFC-885CW is an inkjet "high quality" true multifunction machine with "built in wireless" functionality. Essentially it is a combined "Communications Center" & "Multifunction Printer". Key function's are fax, PCfax, scanner, printer, cordless 5.8ghz phone -(and separate speaker phone), digital answering machine, colour copier, photo center -(with card readers and display). NOTE: No connection to a computer is required to use any of the functions, except the printer or PCfax functions. Overall size is remarkably compact at approx 15WX15LX7H. For full detailed description see the sales literature found all over the web. It comes packaged with the main unit, cordless phone, phone cable, dual paper tray, ink cartridges, software, manuals. GOAL: My goal was to replace my older Panasonic combination phone/fax/answering machine which had given up. As a home/office user I wanted to remain with all three features in one tidy communications unit so as to reduce desk clutter. I also felt this would eliminate the usual compatibility problems of trying to get separate components to work smoothly with each other. Given that this was to be my primary phone I wanted a quality phone that had a good solid feel, and good audio. I was happy with my old Panasonic but after careful study, did not like any of the new Panasonics for various reasons, mostly they felt and looked cheap. Originally I settled on the Canon JX300 phone / fax / answering machine because of its features and compact size but the problems began right out of the box. Then finding out how poorly designed and how ridiculously cheaply made it was, I immediately took it back to the store and bought the Brother MFC-885CW. While I was primarily looking for an all in one Communications Center, the fact that this unit was also a high quality Printer / Scanner / Copier was an added bonus and allowed me to also toss out my old outdated printer and free up even more desk space. This is the first piece of Brother equipment I have ever owned. Warning, if your looking for some "Brother" bashing you won't find it here. I love this machine and the following review probably reads like I'm a salesman for Brother. I am not, I wrote this review because I'm sick and tired of all the garbage on the market, the total lack of service and having to throw stuff out because it is so cheaply made it can't possibly last more than a couple of years. I believe when a company gets it right we should give them our total support and beyond any shadow of a doubt, Brother got it right with this piece of equipment. Either it was a fluke or Brother still believes if they build well designed, high quality equipment, they will be rewarded with sales. Such being the case I pray they sell these units by the truckload and put half their cheap, junk peddling, competitors out of business. My thanks to them will be plastering this review in as many places as I can post it! FIRST IMPRESSION: Before I even left the store I got my first taste of what to expect from Brother. They had thoughtfully put a handle on the box to make it easy to carry, not a big thing I know, but they didn't have to do it, no one else does! (Having just carried the Canon unit in from the parking lot to return it, the thoughtfulness of having a handle to carry out the Brother unit hit home.) After I (easily) carried it into the house and then opened the box they did it again. There on the box flap was a detailed pictorial instruction on how to repack the unit back in the box in the event it ever had to be returned for service. What company on earth gives any thought whatsoever to these little customer conveniences anymore?? Lifting the unit out of the box, and feeling the weight of it, I smiled, I knew then and there I had made the right decision. This was no cheap plastic toy. SET-UP: The unpacking and set-up went smoothly and quickly thanks to an easy to understand "Quick Set-up Guide". This also covered programming all the basic settings and in the end the unit was fully operational without ever having even opened the manual. Here again Brother went above and beyond the call, this is a complex piece of equipment and a child could have followed these instructions. As for the actual manual, it is simply one of the most comprehensive, well written, and logically laid out manuals I have ever come across. As a surprise bonus, and further testimony to Brother's thoughtfulness, the manual is not one of these "thick as a phone book" multi-language monsters with bad English that every other company is sticking us with these days. There are two manuals, one French & one English, both printed in China, but they most certainly were not written there! DESIGN & ENGINEERING: In a word, UNBELIEVABLE! It would be criminal if Brother did not win an award for design & engineering of this unit. It is built like a tank!, and while jammed with every imaginable feature, it takes up amazingly little space on my desk. The quality of the case, the lids, the scanner bed, the drive mechanisms, the paper trays, in everything this quality is instantly obvious. This is the type of Engineering one only finds in 'high end' commercial office equipment. How is it they can do this and still compete with all the others who are selling cheap, "under engineered" garbage? Another "Three Cheers" to Brother for bucking the current trend to save the cost of a few buttons by burying as many settings and user functions as they can in a single multi-function button with layers of hopelessly confusing menus. While the unit does have a multifunction button for lessor used settings and features, it is highly intuitive and a cinch to navigate. Most, if not all of the high use settings / functions are a dedicated button right up front on the beautifully laid out control panel. Another surprise, while these are all labelled with the usual cryptic graphic symbols, they are also labelled with nice BIG labels in English. (Yes, every button can be relabelled in French with the "enclosed" labels) If you don't think this is important, your obviously under 40 and don't wear glasses....yet! The first time you have to go looking for your glasses to send a fax, or make copies, you will appreciate this tiny thoughtful bit of engineering. Speaking of eyesight, how about a massive LCD display screen that tilts so you can set it at the perfect angle for viewing while sitting at your desk. Hardly surprising this display also has adjustable contrast, backlight, dim timer and off timer. Did I forget to mention you can even change the wallpaper on the screen...Good Grief! Besides it's use for changing various settings, the display also serves numerous functions within each of the key components of the machine, (ie: phone, fax, message center, etc) and in many cases provides 'on screen' prompts, or animated instructions to assist with various tasks. For example, step by step animated instructions for changing cartridges or clearing a paper jam, photos can be displayed on the screen and basic editing/enhancements performed without the need to have a computer connected. Faxes can be previewed, etc. OPERATION: This is difficult to cover without looking at each of the key components individually. Suffice it to say that I found the controls to operate each component so highly intuitive the only need I had for the manual was making the initial settings for each. To keep it brief I have listed the various components separately and highlights of each: (Phone): As this was to be a primary phone at my work desk, I wanted a good one and was not disappointed. (NOTE the identical non-cordless model of this machine has a very cheap phone. This is a Quality Cordless 5.8ghz, which sits directly on the charger cradle attached to the main unit. a good comfortable feel and weight. Good, but not great audio quality. Large 4 line lighted display with usual status indicators and caller ID (name & number) functions. Headset jack, Speakerphone feature, call hold, etc. Besides the cordless, the main unit is also an independent speakerphone set with its own caller ID display which can be printed out in a report. The system is expandable to 4 cordless sets. I can think of no room for improvement. (Message Center): (Answering machine) This is a difficult to find feature in a multifunction set like this and as a result there are limited choices. For the home office or small business this is a "must have" feature. There are too many problems trying to integrate a separate answering machine to a fax unit. This was the only part I initially had trouble with as the message center would often not hang up (disconnect the line) after the caller had hung up. This would cause the answering machine to run on until it reached the pre-set time limit for an incoming message. I contacted support and received an immediate response but I believe I resolved the issue myself by changing a setting. The message center itself is pretty basic but well designed and easy to use, recording time is 29 minutes, max of 99 messages. Special features are dual OGM, toll saver & remote retrieval, and limited conversation recording. Audio is again not great, but good and clear. This is the only component of the system where I think Brother COULD HAVE DONE BETTER. Not in terms of quality, but features. In particular, given much of its primary purpose is as a communication center, to prevent junk mail I would have liked to have seen a call screening/blocking feature whereby specific phone numbers can be blocked or referred to an alternate message and disconnected. This is especially important in a business environment to prevent nuisance calls from using up the fax and voice memory with junk messages after hours and on weekends. This feature would cost very little to add but would contribute greatly to the usefulness and desirability of the system as a whole. (Fax): This is a plain paper, high quality, full featured, stand alone fax machine with 10 page auto document feeder. 14400 bps. The unit is extremely well designed and intuitive to use. The best feature is that the paper is stored in a tray within the machine, and not stupidly standing up in a feed slot on top waiting for dust and dirt to fall in the mechanism like so many others. The outgoing fax can be fed into the unit via its top tray like a standard fax or can be sent directly from the scanner glass, or from your computer. Needless to say, because the main unit is also a high quality ink jet 'photo printer', the fax print quality is exceptional. Features are colour or B/W send & receive, 100 station - 2 number speed dial, 6 groups, 250 station broadcasting. Memory transmission and out of paper reception is an amazing 480 pages at standard resolution. Many other valuable features too numerous to mention. (Photo Center): Like every multifunction machine, this component is essentially an enhanced feature of the printer and I would have expected Brother to cut corners here. They did not! Photos can be viewed, manipulated, enhanced / cropped and printed without the need for a computer. The giant adjustable LCD Screen is what really sets this unit apart from all the others, you can clearly see your photos individually or as thumbprints or as a slide show before printing. The built in card readers accept USB Flash, Compact Flash, SDMC, XD, Memory Stick. Others can be used with appropriate adapters. The unit also supports pictbridge technology which allows direct USB interface to your camera. The photo paper is stored in its own tray which sits on top of the regular paper tray protected within the machine. (much like the trays in a commercial photocopier). The paper choices are letter, 4X6, 5X7, or A4. Picture quality is excellent and as good, or better, than my HP2175 and my dedicated Canon photo printer. Resolution up to 1200 X 2400 dpi. (Copier/Scanner/Printer): Not much to say here, again it has too many features to list here, and again this unit exceeds the best of them. Copies and scans are crystal clear. Scan resolution 1200 X 1200 standard, 19200 X 19200 optional, 600 X 2400 optical. Printer resolution is up to 1200 X 6000 dpi., best realistically being 1200 X 2400dpi, down to 600 X 150 in draft mode. Speed in draft is a quick 30 pages/min B&W. Paper size is letter, legal, executive, A4, A5, A6 and common size envelopes with 100 sheet /20lb paper tray. Scan from the glass to the fax or computer or directly to your memory/flash card media. Uses 4 separate ink cartridges and thankfully, are separate from the print head assembly. While I do not recall pricing, I did check at time of purchase and felt they were competitive with other brands. SOFTWARE / WIRELESS LAN: (***NOTE: I do not use the printer function for documents sent from the computer so I can not comment on the supplied software and drivers for this function. Neither can I comment on the Network Lan / wireless functions***) The documentation states the software is compatible with Windows 2000 Pro, XP, X64, Vista, Mac 10.2.4 or greater. LAN Wired support, Ethernet 10/100 Base-TX Auto, Wireless IEEE 802.11 b/g. COMPLAINTS: None, however I would like to see Brother enhance the "Communications Center" features of this unit, such as more advanced phone features and call screening / blocking added to the Message Center. While this unit has a good quality cordless phone, the "corded phone" version of this model has a cheap looking and feeling receiver which undermines the high quality of the rest of the unit. OVERVIEW: If your looking for a high quality "all in one" phone/fax/answering machine, buy it. It is absolutely the best there is, and get a high quality printer/scanner/copier/photo center basically for free. If your looking for a high quality "all in one" printer/scanner/copier/photo center, buy it. It is the best there is, and get a high quality phone/fax/answering machine basically for free. Either way you win! If your looking for "all of these components" in one compact high quality unit, look no further, this is not only your best choice, it's your only choice. I spent countless hours studying the market before buying this unit, I can safely say there is nothing on the planet that even comes close to it in terms of quality, design and versatility at any price!! You won't be disappointed.
