10/30/2008 7:26:30 PM I am writing about the routing that is selected by Magellan Maestro 3100. First I can?t believe that there isn?t a pick for ?Avoid High Crime Areas? this pick could increase sales exponentially. I was going from North Hills Pittsburgh, PA to Monroeville, PA. The route took me through ?The Hill District? a very high crime area. Using trip I added an intermediate location and got a proper route maybe not the best but OK. Example two while not high crime Butler, PA is congested with narrow streets and lots of traffic lights any attempt to go from Leechburg, PA to Clearview Mall, North of Butler goes through the city while I want to go on Bonnybrook Road, picking Avoid Highways should pick this road. No! After 5 or so ?Make the next legal U Turn? messages it starts ?Turn left ...? at each intersection. It gets worse! While on a sight seeing trip in Titusville, PA, we wanted to go to the Grove City Outlets. The first route went from our present location at the T&OC Rail Road Station to Pettit Street and told us to take South Street. Pettit is a dead end at a housing construction project. Well I turned around to the protests of that condescending Magellan Lady, no she ain?t no lady. My wife stopped me from throwing the Magellan GPS unit through the window. Next I found my way downtown. I couldn?t remember the intermediate town I wanted so it made us go down Route 8 to 80 then 79 rather than Route 27 to 79. Later I found out that different roads need different designations, the number should do but sometimes you need to preface the number with route, PA, US or who knows what else ??? We were on vacation with a destination in Rapho Twp. mailing address Manheim, PA. From our home in Leechburg, PA. we were taking a scenic route purposely. Our plan was to start on Route 22 to Altoona then on 220/99 to Tyrone, 453 to 22, through Lewistown and outside Harrisburg we wanted to turn on 443 through Fort Indiantown Gap then down 72 to Manheim. Now! It was my fault that I didn?t check on construction on Route 22 but The detour process was handled by paper map the detour pick on the Magellan, with varying distances, put us on cow paths, through small towns and would have added, an hour or so, to the trip. Next it took four intermediate picks to get to Lewistown, PA and there was no way that I could not make it take Route 443. It couldn?t find 443, Bordnesville, Lickdale, Jonestown or even Fort Indiantown Gap (A National Historic Site)! It kept telling us to make every right turn to go back to US 81. Route 81 isn?t in the ?Least Use of Freeways? maybe you need a ?Least Use of Highways?. The only places I really could have used a functional GPS was at several ?Y? intersections on 443 that were not well marked. I looked at the map and guessed. Once at Route 72 Maestro did fine. I am glad I didn?t throw my paper maps away! PS I sent these comments 9/4/2008 and received no response |

12/25/2007 5:25:34 PM I've never made a wrong turn since I've started using my 3100. I've always made my appointments, if I had to take a detour I arrive on time. |
