I was really excited when I found a DVR + DVD player & burner for a great price. Ordered it, picked it up at the store, got it all hooked up, and.... It had a problem with the sound. When you paused a live broadcast, and then restarted it the sound was almost unintelligible. Sounded like it had been through a special effects sound filter. Once the sound had gone weird it was very difficult to get the sound to be correct again (turn unit off, switch to HDD playback, etc.). I also found the unit would not finalize a dubbed recording from the HDD to DVD. I was using one of the listed DVD types from the manual. Enough! Returned it and ordered another unit assuming I'd just got a lemon since the overall reviews were pretty good. Waited another week or so for the replacement to arrive. Hooked this unit up, went to play a DVD, and once again the sound goes weird. Called customer service. They thought I might have a bad HDMI cable. Switched out without fixing the problem. Finally hooked the unit up via component cables and no more sound problems. Once again tried to burn a DVD from the HDD to a TDK DVD+R 16x which is one of the recommended types. Once again the recorder will not finalize a recording so it can be played on another machine. Thinking that the DVD might be the problem (even though it's on the recommended list), I ordered Verbatim DVD+RW 4x disks. They arrived today. Put one in, and guess what, the machine says the disk is non-recordable when it tries to format it (tried it 3 times). At this point having spent about $70 on Media, I give up. This is a piece of Chinese made junk! Where Magnavox used to be a lower level product of Philips (kind of like a chevy to a buick), that's no longer the case. Magnavox is now made by Funai company in China. My guess would be that Philips has sold or licensed the name. What a disservice to us customers. All I can end with is BUY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, and be prepared to spend money trying to find a DVD that actually will work.
