Visual SourceSafe 2005 is a version control system product that delivers restore point and parallel collaboration capabilities, thus allowing application development organizations to work on several versions of software simultaneously. It's much like the Team version., although a much more limited version. Some differences between the two software packages:
Visual SourceSafe 2005 is a completely self-contained system that requires no other software. Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server is a server-based system that leverages several Microsoft technologies.
Typically, Visual SourceSafe 2005 is installed on the same machine as the Visual Studio 2005 development environment, whereas Team Foundation Server is installed on a separate server and accessed remotely.
Setting up a dedicated server for Team Foundation Server can be a complex task beyond the capabilities of some users.
Visual SourceSafe is licensed individually, whereas Team Foundation Server is licensed on a server and CAL (client access license) model.
Visual SourceSafe's basic file sharing is ideal for teams who need occasional collaboration and is not intended for scenarios where a high degree of parallel development is required.
Some small teams or individuals will only need source code control. Visual SourceSafe 2005 is simple, lightweight, and easy to use, and so it is ideally suited for this type of customer.
Some of the new features for Visual SourceSafe 2005 (over Visual SourceSafe 6.0) include:
Time Period: 12/19/2005 through 12/1/2008 Each tick mark represents one week
