ABOUT COOKIES

A cookie is a small bit of information that a web server uses to identify an individual user either for the short or the long term. Cookies can be stored either in your computer's system memory (for the short term) or on your hard drive (for the long term). As you click through a site in a single session, the server will know that you are the same visitor because your (short-term) cookie is the same. If you return to the site at another time, the server will recognize that you have been there before because it remembers your (long-term) cookie.

The first cookie, , is not stored on your computer's hard drive but is only active in system memory (RAM) in your web browser's memory space. It will be deleted when you close your browser.

This cookie is used to save short-term settings relevant only to the current browsing session. For example, suppose that you search for some book prices and then decide that you want them sorted in a different order. This cookie remembers the results of your search for a short time (for the life of a session, which is 20 minutes) so that they can simply be resorted. This is a lot quicker than starting your search all over again with a different sort order.

The second cookie, pricescan, is stored in a text file on your computer along with the cookies of all the other web sites which issue cookies. We use this cookie to count the number of unique visitors to PriceSCAN, which is basically the number of different people who come and visit our site over a period of time.

The third cookie, pricescan_temp, is a short-term cookie which exists only in memory and lasts only for the duration of a single visit. It helps us count the number of visitors who go from one part of PriceSCAN to another.
