PriceSCAN Press Release
PriceSCAN Vice President of Financial Products Daniel Fehder commented that the Digital Camcorder – HD Index has remained flat in the first quarter of 2009. Since the beginning of the new year, the index has declined only 2%, compared with an 8% decline during the holidays.
Jeff Trester, PriceSCAN Co-CEO and Chief Economist, noted, “We’ve noted stability and even price increases for several types of electronic goods that allow cash-strapped consumers to enhance stay-at-home entertaining, including digital camcorders, Blu-ray players and wireless routers. To the extent this support extends to somewhat higher end items, such as high-def camcorders, we may be seeing evidence of a slight increase in the willingness of buyers to spend. That said, even in the face of slack demand, a drawdown in inventory may also be bolstering tech prices for the moment. But such a drawdown may presage greater wholesale-level demand for manufacturing to replenish inventories, which would also be a welcome hint of recovery.”
