PriceSCAN Press Release
PriceSCAN Vice President of Financial Products Daniel Fehder commented that significant discounting of AMD Athlon and Phenom series chips by retailers last week meant that in many cases the current retail price was at or below the wholesale rates announced by AMD on September 1. The AMD Quadcore Index dipped 7.6% last week, and the AMD Dual Core Index dropped 6.7% last week
Jeff Trester, PriceSCAN Co-CEO and Chief Economist, noted, “In the context of a slowing economy, a retail discount to wholesale could be indicative of weak demand, possibly accompanied by excess inventory. This is not a comforting sign coming out of the back to school period and approaching the holiday season.”
The PriceSCAN Manufactured Product Indices are a set of 50 indices tracking a broad array of finished good prices at the retail level. The PriceSCAN indices are carried on Bloomberg's data service under the ticker symbol PRIC and are available on PriceSCAN.com’s website at http://www.pricescan.com/indices.
